It wasn\u2019t the debate result many in the media wanted. Author Marianne Williamson <\/a>was the surprise star of a debate where she had very little time compared to her opponents \u2013 less than half that of the big-name candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Williamson\u2019s debate strategy was to push for \u201cradical truth-telling.\u201d This included a call for up to $500 billion in reparations for African-Americans<\/a> and some tough talk about the Flint, Michigan, water crisis that won her loud support in the Detroit audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York Times reporter Katie Benner pointed out how Williamson used Flint \u201cto tackle the issue of racism head on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FEW ATTACKS IN CNN DEBATE AS TOP CANDIDATES STICK TO \u00dcBER-LIBERAL STANCES<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Los Angeles Times National Correspondent Matt Pearce described Williamson as \u201coften a much more skilled communicator than most of the other politicians on the stage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It showed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Williamson scored big online as a result. She was only the top-searched candidate in two states before the debate, according to Google Trends. Afterward, she was the top Googled candidate in all but Montana. That\u2019s about a 2,450 percent increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Williamson\u2019s most memorable line of the night talked about the failure of \u201cthis wonkiness\u201d to combat \u201cthis dark psychic force of the collectivized hatred that this president is bringing up in this country.\u201d While the comment was mocked by some on Twitter, it also resonated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vanity Fair reporter Tina Nguyen joked: \u201cNext debate: \u2018Show of hands, who pledges on this stage to be against dark psychic forces.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York Times columnist Ross Douthat criticized CNN\u2019s handling of Williamson. \u201cCNN obviously spooked by the \u2018oops, we made Trump president\u2019 experience into not giving Williamson the space and air she deserves,\u201d he commented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comedian Sarah Silverman summed up a lot of the positive and negative comments at once, noting of Williamson: \u201cShe may be granola whacky but she\u2019s right.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not everyone was happy about Williamson\u2019s success. Vox Senior Correspondent Zack Beauchamp said she \u201cis funny in isolation but when you think about it for more than two seconds her presence on this stage is genuinely disturbing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York Times White House Correspondent Annie Karni retweeted Breitbart Senior Editor-at-Large Joel Pollak\u2019s comment about Williamson having a \u201cstrong night.\u201d She added: \u201cTrump supporters eager to keep Marianne-mentum going.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And New York Daily News Opinion Editor Josh Greenman added: \u201cWilliamson should have revealed her heat vision and mind control superpowers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Drudge Report ran it as \u201cCLASH OF THE LIBS!\u201d But unlike its major media competitors, Drudge also highlighted the rise of Williamson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWILLIAMSON WARNS OF ‘DARK DAYS’ FOR DEMS,\u201d ran a Drudge headline. The site linked to two separate Williamson stories. And though it was a simple push poll, she also won the Drudge poll with 47 percent of online voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
